Anna Rylander, PhD, holds a PhD from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, and an MSc in International Business Administration from the University of Uppsala, including studies at the Ecole the Management in Lyon, France. Prior to joining academia she worked as a management consultant based in London, UK, working with clients all over Europe and in the US. In parallel with her academic pursuit she has continued to work with clients to explore the interface between tangible and intangible dimensions of knowledge work. Anna also takes an active interest in supporting social entrepreneurship and holds several board positions in this area.

Anna’s research interests revolves around the roles of identity and design in knowledge work. Her empirical studies have focused on the role of the physical setting in identity construction as well as the design process as an approach to problem-solving and knowledge creation. She is currently exploring designers’ practices, identity constructions and roles in clients’ innovation processes in the Project Making Sense of Knowledge Work, together with Katarina Wetter Edman. She is deeply inspired by pragmatist philosophy, especially John Dewey and G. H. Mead whose thoughts provide the foundation for theoretical developments. She has published articles in several international management journals.

Anna is the project leader of DESMA, the EU-funded network and doctorial programme lead by BDL/HDK, with Aalto University, Helsinki, Imperial College London, and Politecnico di Milano, as academic partners and Cassina, Engine, Future Concept Lab, LiveWork, Living Labs Global, Philips, Volvo Group and Veryday, as company partners.
Anna is responsible for the course in Design, Strategy and Innovation at the Master Programme in Business & Design, collaboration between HDK and the School of Economics, Business & Law, Gothenburg University.
