Since Design Management emerged as a concept and field of research in the 1980s it has developed into different fields and theoretical schools. If the aim of design management then, for teaching and research, was to demonstrate the value of design, the field of design management research today is much more diversified. Research in design within the context of management has different perspectives, aims and theoretical frameworks – and is rarely referred to as design management. Terms like design thinking, strategic design, design innovation, service design, critical design etc, are defining the context and framework. One thing is certain though; the interest in design has expanded way beyond the original notion of design management.
The great variety of research projects at BDL is demonstrating this point.
